Garlic Scapes Recipes

The Great Garlic Scapes Recipes, Find them in the Internet!

There’s something else to garlic aside from its bulb; they are called garlic scapes and they are used for cooking just like garlic. Garlic scapes recipes are found in many cookbooks and it’ll be a delightful experience to cooking and eat them. They are the green outgrowth that comes from the bulb of hard neck garlic. They can be eaten raw, cooked as food on their own, or as delicious ingredients to other dishes.

They are tasty and good substitutes for the bulb if you want your food to have a tinge of garlic, minus the smell. Scapes are usually thrown away in large garlic plantations and it’s such a waste since they are a delicacy on their own. The reason for this is because you can’t stock garlic scapes for a longtime since they have very short shelf lives. You have to refrigerate them in order for them to survive longer. Transporting them to other places is not viable. You’ll need refrigerated cargo trucks to bring them one place to another and their commercial appeal is not proven yet.

In some Asian countries they are considered luxury foods and many recipes have been written about them. They are not only delicious they are also very nutritious. Garlic scapes recipes are indeed very popular there.

Their bright green appearance lends a fresh outlook to dishes and they are not only attractive to the eyes but also inviting to the mouth. They’re stems are sometimes thick or thin and they can be lengthy and convoluted or just simply looped in the manner of their growth. They look serpentine in some cases.

They are harvested from the top of the growing garlic without stunting the growth of the bulbs. Removing the scapes will instead aid in the development of the bulbs similar to when pruning grape vines in order to stimulate the development of their fruits. Scapes don’t need to be cooked long. Usually, you include them as the last ingredient when cooking a dish. You can eat them raw as salads, though they may be way too spicy and hard for some.

They are usually abundant in some areas of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and other North American countries in the summer months such as June and July, well after spring. It’s the season for feasting on the wild side of garlic which is entirely edible except for the very hard part near the bulb. Don’t let their appearance fool you. Scapes are good for the stomach.

Garlic scapes are best for light cooking like pan fried dishes. They are also great as ingredients for pasta foods and pizzas. They are marvelous in soups and stews as green onion replacements. And of course they are best in making pesto, guacamole, and tortilla recipes. You can also make pickles out of them. They are as versatile as the bulb where they are gleaned.

There’s no mention of any medicinal values that scapes possess. But as a culinary ingredient they can be relied upon to give the bulbs a run for their money. Start looking for garlic scapes recipes on line.
