Garlic Seeds
Using Garlic Seeds is Better!
Garlic can be propagated by using either cloves or seeds. Using cloves is a little
disadvantageous than using garlic seeds. The cloves are taken from the same generations of garlic planted season
after season. When seen in the context of human relationships, planting garlic using the cloves is like a family
intermarrying each other. If there are weaknesses in the gene pool it will manifest sooner or later and will make
the offspring’s weaker and sicklier. That’s what’ll exactly happen when using cloves in planting garlic.
Using seeds are much better. The seeds can be chosen from other stocks of garlic plants. Planting
garlic using the seeds is more discriminating because the seeds of the weaker plants are discarded and not included
in the gene pool. What happens is that only the seeds of the biggest bulbs are going to be used for planting.
Replanting of the weaker stocks is disallowed.
Another thing, garlic cloves when used continuously for planting will soon lose their ability
to fight certain kinds of plant diseases and may become prone to attacks of fungi and molds. Changing the variety
of garlic is good for the soil as well. Aside from being resistant to pests found in the soil, the soil will also
benefit from planting new varieties every few years. Different kinds of plants uses different soil nutrients.
Planting another variety will help the soil recover the depleted nutrients used by the other varieties
before.
Order your seeds directly from the stock sellers not from your
nearby supermarkets. They may have been there for a long time and their germinative power may have been
depleted so much. Aside from this, they may have been treated with preservatives to prevent them from spoiling
due to molds, fungi or bacteria.
Using seeds will give you another batch even as you gather them during the incoming harvest.
It’s easier to keep the seeds for the next crop year than when keeping the cloves. It occupies a smaller space and
they are not as sensitive as cloves in the way they are stored.
Garlic seeds are planted one to one and a half months before frosts set in. They are
buried in garlic beds about 3-4 inches underground. Don’t plant them too deep giving the spout hard time from
coming out under the soil, nor too shallow for the frost to affect their viability. Raised beds are preferable
because they are easier to maintain and defend. You can cover raised beds easily with leaves than flat beds.
Fertilizers are easier to apply and the seeds able to use more of them.
Everybody knows that garlic is a good food seasoning and preservative. It is also used as one
of the ingredients for vinegar mix preparations. It gives the whole mix a distinctive taste and smell. It’s good
for seasoning and dip at the same time. It has also a strong therapeutic effect. It’s used in treating both simple
and serious diseases. It’s very popular as an alternative medicine. It’s safe and effective with very few side
effects. It’s very cheap and can be bought without a doctor’s prescription.
